Gerald Gilbert
Though coming late into writing I have been a freelance journalist since qualifying on a home study course with a distinction. I have been educated in the field of cultural studies and media but my interests are far wider. Including: the environment, politics, social issues, and the arts. My experience so far has been writing for a website on mental health issues for a local charity. Before that I designed, researched, wrote, and published a newsletter for the same charity. I have also been published a number of times by my local newspaper and had some experience of a newsroom at work while doing a work placement there. Since gaining my qualifications I have strove to become a professional writer and earn a living from it. My goal is to become a full time journalist on a newspaper and expose social injustice and write about social issues that matter to me. My experience of life includes working in a homeless hostel, in the mental health field, with those who have alcohol and drug problems and an understanding of people on the autistic spectrum. My interest in the arts also led me to work once for an arts project writing press releases for the local paper as well as a review on the local arts festival for a local arts magazine. I have dabbled in creative writing and I once was runner up in a national poetry competition. Other related qualifications include a ‘B’ in history, a distinction in improvised drama and a distinction in computer aided design using a desk top publishing package. To relax I enjoy: films, reading, listening to and sometimes playing music, (I was once a drummer in a Goth rock band) social networking, chess and I am a big fan of police drama shows.
